Today was an interesting day.

Not only was it the first day of school, but S and I also successfully made our first batch of pasta from scratch !

Over winter break, a good friend introduced me to Williams-Sonoma…and there is simply no resisting that lovely, beautiful store. While perusing the fondue section, I passed by a doodad with an eye-catching metallic shade of red – “Imperia Pasta Machine” – it read.

I promptly returned the jeans I had bought for S, and purchased this cute little old-fashioned gadget as a fun gift for my food-loving boyfriend.

So in celebration of having nothing to study yet, and of 2010, we did a quick stop at Trader Joe’s to pick up some ground beef, onions, marinara, and a back-up pack of pasta should our little endeavor fail.

Imperia Pasta Machine

Rolling, rolling.

feeding it into the machine's mini-rolling pin

noodles coming out !!

fresh pasta!

Seriously, that was one of the most satisfying experiences ever (:

But of course, the beginning didn’t go as smoothly as expected. Our first try at making the dough resulted in an egg explosion…with an epic failure of runny yellow stuff with white chunks dripping off the dining table and onto the floor. However, that did not deter us, and it all worked out in the end!

the end product, with a bottle of Happiness !

Our freshly made pasta was actually quite delicious ! It has a chewiness to it that leaves me wanting more, and of course to top off our fun meal we had Trader Joe’s “Bottle of Happiness.” Isn’t that bottle something ?

Happy New Year everybody  ~ 2009 was superb, and I can only hope that 2010 will be just as sensational.

Happy weekend !

Sunshine came up to visit from San Diego this weekend: it was great to see her again and gab over the beautiful tragedy of the DeTambles and Julia Child’s magical kitchen.

To celebrate, the boyfriend decided go all out and make a most delicious Leek and Pea Risotto with Shrimp.

Using home-make chicken stock helps ! But…we didn’t have any, so (:

Prepare and thoroughly wash the leeks ! Saute them with asparagus, and thaw out the green beans.

Laugh a little while you’re rushing around the kitchen with your girlfriend getting in the way !

Peel the shrimp.

Don’t crowd the shrimp !

Put the greens in 😀

Then the shrimp. Pretty colors ~

Ladling, serving ~

Ta-da ! Delicious. Good job boyfriend !

And all the while watching UCLA champion over Kansas State. Cool ! Go Bruins ~

Have a happy Sunday !

The things that have increased exponentially since I’ve started dating S:

Eating steak
Watching basketball
Screaming for the Lakers but…
Disliking Kobe. Even more.
Drinking green tea
Drinking wine
Playing MARIO KART !
Cooking (seriously ! hahahaha)
Doing dishes (at his place)
Taking random naps
GOING TO CLASS <<– daniel will like this one. so will your dad…and mine, I think.

And…spending time with his parents ! (:

Mr. and Mrs. parents-of-S came down this weekend and invited us for a lovely little study break. The night included scrumptious Japanese food in little Tokyo and then a musical by the East West Players in the David Henry Hwang Theatre. It was “an evening of 2 one-act musicals,” Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim and The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, both produced by Tim Dang.

The theater itself is very quaint,  converted from a tiny church into a theater in 1992 (?), allowing for a very intimate setting. Marry Me A Little with Mike Dalager and Jennifer Hubilla was aiiiiiiiiiiiiight….kind of long, kind of draggy, and the female vocals hurt my head.

But it was worth sitting through an hour (with intermission) to be set up for the second act, The Last Five Years with Jennifer Paz and Michael K. Lee. Which was sensational, to say the last. Both the female and male vocals were breathtaking, Michael Lee gives an extremely convincing performance !

Definitely worth waiting for ! I recommend it – for friends and couples – who have Thursday or Saturday nights free at 8 pm !

😀 That is all. Now back to studying !!

and a double shot please.
