Signs of Affection !

Today I am curious about the history of hand-holding and kissing.

If you stop the think about it, those are some of the weirdest things we humans do – who thought of smooshing your mouth with another person’s as a way of showing love, and holding hands as a way of affection ?

Not that I don’t enjoy these things; some well-timed kisses rank among the top 5 most memorable moments in my puny little life so far, and many girlfriends have said to me “…but I don’t want a boyfriend ! I just want someone to hold hands with.”

So the only thing I could find about holding hands is this: it remains the single aspect of PDA that is unaffected by the sexual revolution. Go here for more information ! Today, hand holding has become more ‘special’ than kissing – think room full of college students drenched in alcohol: more free kisses or hand-holdings ?

Kisses! Asian people don’t kiss. Seriously. If you are asian, don’t you cringe at the thought of your parents having any physical affection ? (Disclaimer: my family seems to be an exception – my parents were/are very affectionate :D)

Why do we kiss?

1) Kissing allows prospective mates to smell and taste each other’s pheromones for biological compatibility. (This was all I learned from freshmen sex cluster. Now go forth and mate with someone who has drastically different MHC genes !)
2) It makes your body gush oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline ! (: Dang, now who wouldn’t want that rush ?
 

3 types of kisses, according to the Romans:

1) Osculum – a friendship kiss on the cheek
2) Basium – a kiss of affection on the lips
3) Savolium (or savium) – a lover’s deep kiss 
How much work in 1 kiss ?

It requires a total of 20 muscles working in coordination to pucker up for one swell kiss. (Good job people !)
